Phlebotomy COVID Champion

My name is Khadija Bakali and I’m a proud phlebotomist!

During these hard times we all are striving to do positive things for each other as much as we can.  Being a phlebotomist at the George Eliot Hospital l see new people throughout the day. Whilst carrying out my role as a phlebotomists I have many conversations.  Since the start of COVID – 19 this has dominated the conversations.

Most of the time these conversations bring out the trauma, anxiety and hardships vulnerable people are facing as they are either shielding or isolating. I feel that l had to do something for them and help ease their fears. I started making plans. I now work part-time and commit to working 3 hours as a Covid community champion.  l am qualified to answer general questions about Covid and its vaccine and also know the pathway to sign post them if people need guidance.

To maximise my new found skills and enthusiasm I also joined the Befriended volunteer service with Warwickshire CAVA to support people with insecurities, loneliness and anxiety by being there for them as Befriending Volunteer.

I must say the satisfaction this work gives me is a real treasure of life especially when at the end of the call they say “can you call again please as it has made my day.” But in reality it MADE MY DAY. I love being able to help people.
